A Must-Watch Lovecraft Horror Show Returning For Season 4
Fans of Lovecraftian horror might have quite a few TV shows to choose from, but they must not miss out on a brilliant 96% RT series that is scheduled to return for season 4. The show in question follows an original storyline and has also been touted as the perfect Lost replacement. However, despite being original, it draws from many diverse works of fiction.
Although there is a high demand for cosmic horror movies and shows, most live-action additions to the genre struggle to capture the essence of Lovecraftian terrors. Because of how abstract and ambiguous Lovecraftian storytelling can be, shows and movies inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s work rarely capture the fear of the unknown that defines the horror sub-genre.
Interestingly, a highly acclaimed TV series, which has already lasted for three seasons, achieves the rare feat of encapsulating many Lovecraftian elements. The show is scheduled to return for season 4 and will likely delve deeper into its cosmic horror elements with one compelling story beat.
MGM+’s From Is A Fantastic Show With Lovecraftian Horror Themes
MGM+’s From is an original show that is not based on specific works of literary horror. Yet, it is hard not to notice how it heavily draws from Lovecraftian horror. Like many a cosmic horror story, the show introduces a chilling, unknowable threat that manipulates and even warps the perceptions and emotions of those trapped within its grasp.
Even the central town in the show does not seemingly belong to the human realm, hinting at how it exists somewhere outside space and time. In Lovecraftian stories, humans are often exposed to even greater threats when they set out on a pursuit to seek forbidden knowledge. This highlights humanity’s insignificance against the vastness of the universe.
From‘s main characters experience something when they attempt to understand the unknown around them and are, at times, even driven into madness. So far, From has not confirmed the existence of an overarching Cthulhu-like figure. However, several story beats hint that a powerful, ancient force, like the Great Old Ones, is at play.
With so many overlaps between From and Lovecraftian stories, it would be fair to call From a cosmic horror series. Owing to this, the ones who enjoy reading books that dabble with Lovecraftian horror will undoubtedly have a good time watching From on MGM+.
HP Lovecraft Story May Hold The Answers To From’s Mysterious New Villain
The Man in the Yellow Suit is one of the most mysterious figures in From. While a lot about him remains unknown, it has been theorized that he may be controlling the central Township. Another intriguing theory about the Man in the Yellow Suit associates him with the titular figure from Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow, which was among the first literary cosmic horror works that inspired H.P. Lovecraft.
According to the compelling theory, the Man in the Yellow Suit could be Hastur, a cosmic deity whose purpose is to plunge reality into chaos and bring the alien city of Carcosa to Earth. In From, the monsters haunting the central town may just be Hastur’s minions, enforcing his will and ensuring humans remain trapped in the cyclical terrors of the setting.
True Detective season 1 also subtly drew references to The King in Yellow, Hastur, and Carcosa.
The central town itself might be Carcosa, serving as an extension of Hastur’s growing influence on humanity. If From season 4 doubles down on these Lovecraftian horror inclinations, it would be interesting to see how it will handle the more abstract elements of cosmic horror in future story beats.
