A Must-Watch for True Detective Fans
Every fan of HBO’s classic series True Detective must watch the premium streamer’s latest crime drama masterpiece streaming right now on HBO Max.
HBO is home to some of the best limited series ever made, such as Chernobyl, The Night Of, Mare of Easttown, Band of Brothers, and The Penguin. Although the series premiere has just been released, it’s safe to say that this new critically acclaimed HBO miniseries with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88% belongs in that esteemed category.
Task Is HBO’s Latest Crime Drama Masterpiece
HBO’s new crime drama series Task is the network’s latest masterpiece. Created by Brad Ingelsby of Mare of Easttown and The Way Back acclaim, the 7-part limited series features a stellar ensemble cast led by Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, Jamie McShane, Emilia Jones, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Thuso Mbedu, Owen Teague, Sam Keely, and more.
Task follows Ruffalo’s FBI field agent Tom Brandis, who leads a task force to investigate a string of robberies in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Struggling with personal tragedy as well, Tom pours himself into his lawful pursuit, while Pelphrey’s unpredictable Robbie Prendergrast does whatever it takes to keep his family’s head above water.
Screen Rant’s 9/10-star review of Task noted, “There’s a True Detective tone quietly simmering throughout the entire series, as well as moments reminiscent of Sons of Anarchy, Ozark, The Last of Us, and even The Bear.” We attest that Task is continued evidence “that the HBO + Ingelsby formula is one of modern television’s safest bets.”
While the True Detective series has fluctuated in quality throughout its four seasons, it collectively offers some of the best murder mystery detective-focused content on HBO Max. Task isn’t so much about cracking down on a serial killer like in True Detective season 1, but it is not afraid to get philosophical and offers words of wisdom through its dialogue, much like Matthew McConaughey’s iconic Rusty Cohle.
Task Is On Par With True Detective Season 1
One of True Detective‘s signature tropes is following self-destructive or problematic police officers and members of law enforcement. Task achieves a similar tone that refuses to overly glorify cops the way you would see in classic and network TV shows. Instead, Task takes a deep dive into the human beings behind the badges, revealing that they cannot only be flawed, but vulnerable.
Task’s second episode will hit HBO Max this Sunday, where things are expected to heat up after a thrilling premiere episode. If you enjoyed the gritty crime tone in the masterful True Detective season 1 that still delivers on high-octane action sequences and thought-provoking, well-written dialogue, then Task is an absolute must-watch for you on HBO Max.
