A Must-Watch for 1923 Fans
For those who enjoyed watching a former 007 in a Western TV series with Timothy Dalton in 1923, make sure you also watch Pierce Brosnan in The Son. Timothy Dalton’s performance as the antagonist in 1923 is one of the best parts of the prequel to the beloved Western TV show Yellowstone.
Dalton plays Donald Whitfield, a powerful and wealthy business tycoon who tries to take the Dutton land out from under their family. It’s a fantastic performance and a reminder that James Bond actors are more than debonair spies, just look at Pierce Brosnan in The Son, another Western TV series.
Pierce Brosnan Stars As Eli McCullough In The Son
Pierce Brosnan stars in The Son, a series that premiered in 2017 on AMC, as Eli McCullough, a Texas cattle baron. When Eli was a young boy in the middle of the 19th century, he was abducted by a ruthless band of Comanches from whom he learned the ways of the prairie frontier.
The series jumps back and forth between 1849 and the trauma Eli experienced as first a slave of the Comanche before becoming a valued member of the tribe, and 1915, where the adult Elli has become a successful cattle baron who has his eye on a new source of wealth: oil.
Despite eventually escaping the Comanches, the actions he took as part of their tribe and the guilt he suffers continue to affect him. What’s more, his hopes to turn his oil and cattle business over to his sons and grandchildren are put at risk when outside forces converge to take away everything he’s worked to gain.
The Son Is Much Better Than Its 52% On Rotten Tomatoes Suggests
On Rotten Tomatoes, The Son season 1 has only a 52%, while season 2, which premiered in 2019, is currently unrated. Some of the criticisms surrounding the show include issues with the slow pace of the series and the occasional, oddly directed scene. However, The Son still deserves to be seen.
Brosnan is also fantastic as the lead, bringing gravitas, swagger, and charm when necessary…
There is a lot to like about the show, including its time-jumping storyline that offers new insights into Eli’s character and the way he sees the world. Brosnan is also fantastic as the lead, bringing gravitas, swagger, and charm when necessary, but also a hard-bitten anger as well that works well for a character trying to ignore his demons.
The Son is an epic series, cross-stitching different eras of the American West in a way that other Westerns, like those in the Sheridanverse, require multiple shows to accomplish. The series has big appetites, and when it wants to deliver a powerful scene, it can do so better than most other Westerns.
