A Heartbreaking Performance In Murder In A Small Town

Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically passed away on July 20, 2025, due to accidental drowning in Costa Rica at age 54. Warner’s last posthumous role will be in the best murder mystery show you’re probably not watching: Murder in a Small Town.

Rossif Sutherland (son of Donald Sutherland) leads the cast of Murder in a Small Town as Karl Alberg. Alberg is the new Chief of Police in the small coastal town of Gibsons, British Columbia, who forms a close friendship – leading to something more – with Cassandra Lee (Kristin Kreuk), the town librarian, by the Murder in a Small Town season 1 finale.

Murder in a Small Town is a cozy mystery TV show, more tonally similar to Murder, She Wrote than True Detective or Broadchurch. With a new case of the week, there are always opportunities for brilliant guest stars like Warner in the upcoming season 2, which premieres September 23, 2025.

Murder in a Small Town is a quintessential cozy mystery show – where each week brings a new case, gentle small-town charm, and endless opportunities for guest-stars. The series is more of a character study, heavy on atmosphere and light on plot. Season 1 showcased memorable special guests like James Cromwell, Devon Sawa, and Noah Reid.

Murder in a Small Town season 2 continues this trend, with notable guest stars including Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) and Malcolm-Jamal Warner in his final performance. This model borrows from the appeal of Poker Face‘s hook of high-profile guest appearances each week.

Warner is best known for The Cosby Show, where he played Theo Huxtable, the warm-hearted but insecure Huxtable son, although Warner played a very different character in his last leading TV role as the assured, steely surgeon Dr. Austin in The Resident. Warner’s last posthumous role will be in Murder in a Small Town season 2, episode 3.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner will appear in Murder in a Small Town season 2, episode 3, “Mother Love,” scheduled to air on October 7, 2025 (per People.com). Warner will play Richard Buscombe, a single father who becomes a murder suspect when his ex-wife is killed shortly after arriving in Gibsons.

Showrunner and executive producer Ian Weir praised Warner, saying the performance “glows with integrity” and Warner imbued new “levels” to the character. Buscombe had never fully healed after the relationship ended, but now his sole focus is on protecting his teenage daughter.

In an online tribute, Warner’s mother shared that her son “was in love with the magic of being an actor, always studying and honing his craft.” Watching Warner’s character grapple with loss in Murder in a Small Town season 2 will hopefully be a cathartic farewell role, a fitting final chapter to a television legend who passed too soon.
