14 Supernatural Outcast Powers In Netflix’s Wednesday Explained

Wednesday centers on a school of outcasts, but even within Nevermore Academy, the outcast groups can be differentiated further thanks to their various powers. The members of the Addams Family tree have always been unusual, but Wednesday’s powers and the highlighting of her peers at a new school took that even further.

Nevermore Academy includes various outcast species, with Wednesday season 2 revealing even more unique powers for the students, teachers, and those in the surrounding areas of the school. By Wednesday season 1’s ending, Wednesday had developed her psychic powers far more than before and uncovered the truth about various other outcasts.

Wednesday season 2’s ending doubles down on this thanks to a continued exploration of outcast powers. With Wednesday season 3’s story only promising to venture deeper into the world of outcasts and their special abilities, here is every power that has been introduced in the hit Netflix show thus far.

Psychic Visions

Many of the students at Nevermore have special powers, but Wednesday’s are front and center. Throughout season 1 of the Netflix show, Wednesday has psychic visions that help her uncover the truth about the murders happening around the town of Jericho and how they connect to the town and school’s history.

Wednesday’s visions are the main supernatural focus of the series, given her centrality as a character. However, it is revealed that she is not the only one to have such clairvoyance. Wednesday reveals that Morticia Addams, the titular character’s mother, also has psychic abilities.

This comes from the Frump side of Wednesday’s family, with Hester Frump, Morticia’s mother and Wednesday’s grandmother, also having psychic powers. Wednesday season 2’s Ophelia Frump, Morticia’s sister, was also revealed as a psychic, setting her up as a villain in season 3.

In Wednesday, psychics are split into two different subsections: doves and ravens. Doves, like Morticia, have visions of more positive potential outcomes of the future, while ravens, like Wednesday and Hester, have portents of doom and danger. It will be interesting to see whether the world of psychics expands via Wednesday season 3’s Ophelia, potentially broadening one of the outcast powers.

Werewolf Transformation

One of Nevermore Academy’s biggest cliques is the “furs,” which is fittingly made up of the school’s werewolf population, including Enid. Enid is the most prominent werewolf character in the show, primarily due to being Wednesday’s roommate and best friend, but also her lovable, infectious personality.

For the werewolf group, their power is simply the transformation itself, which has both positives and negatives. The werewolves become more violent and unpredictable, but they are also stronger and faster in their wolf form.

Enid’s cliffhanger story in Wednesday season 2 took the concept of werewolves further. Enid was revealed as the alpha werewolf, someone who is not beholden to full moon transformations and is thus much more powerful than an average werewolf. However, this comes with drawbacks.

Alpha werewolves that transform under the full moon, as Enid did, could be stuck in that form permanently. This would lead Enid to become an outcast even among other werewolves, prompting them to hunt and kill her. This promises a big story for Enid in Wednesday season 3, as the question of whether she can once again revert to the optimistic person she once was looms.

Psychic Animation

Like Wednesday, Xavier falls into the psychic category, though his power is quite different from hers. Xavier has the ability to bring his drawings to life using the power of animation, as was showcased throughout season 1. He first demonstrates this to Wednesday by drawing a spider and animating it off the paper.

Xavier’s artistic and psychic abilities are also connected to his dreams, allowing him to see the Hyde in his dreams before anyone else catches sight of the monster. So far, Xavier is the only outcast shown to have this ability.

The show has since failed to expand on this power due to Xavier’s reduced role, which was driven by Percy Hynes White’s absence in Wednesday season 2.

Psychic Communication

Psychic communication is a fairly broad category, and it seems possible that different variations of it could exist within the world of Wednesday, but so far, audiences have only really seen one character use this power. In Wednesday season 1, Eugene has the power to communicate with and influence bees.

Wednesday season 2 built on this, as it did with many other outcast powers. Eugene was shown to be able to influence various insects, from caterpillars to moths, the latter of which he used to track Wednesday‘s Isaac Night, season 2’s primary villain.

Electrokinesis

Wednesday is not the only member of her family who possesses supernatural abilities, as several are confirmed to have the outcast power of electrokinesis, the manipulation of electricity. Wednesday seasons 1 and 2 both include Uncle Fester, who exhibited this ability several times.

Wednesday’s season 2 introduced yet another member of the family with such a skill after the reveal that Pugsley can do the same. Pugsley’s electric powers are what led to the resurrection of Wednesday season 2’s Isaac Night, with the latter’s mechanical heart being restarted thanks to the jolt of lightning the former accidentally unleashed.

Pyrokinesis

One of the most exciting new characters introduced in Wednesday season 2 was Principal Dort. Dort, played by Steve Buscemi, could create fire, providing Wednesday with yet another outcast power. As with Xavier, Dort is singular in his outcast ability so far, though it stands to reason that others in Wednesday‘s world have power over fire, too.

As was highlighted in the second part of Wednesday season 2, Dort’s pyrokinesis proved deadly and dangerous. Principle Dort was revealed as a conman who wished to steal Hester Frump’s fortune by manipulating her into thinking she was donating it to Nevermore Academy. To cover his tracks, Dort killed people with his fire powers before being stopped by Wednesday and her friends.

DaVinci

Telekinesis outcasts, known in Wednesday as DaVincis, have the power to move things with their minds. Rowan, a character who briefly appeared in Wednesday season 1, was the first shown to have this ability. Wednesday season 2 then delved deeper into the concept, revealing the name DaVinci and why they are named after the legendary artist.

Wednesday season 2 revealed that there are many more DaVincis at Nevermore Academy. During the first batch of episodes, Dort hosted a Founder’s Pyre for the students. Several DaVinci students were responsible for building the pyre, a giant phoenix, which they manipulated to fly using their powers.

Shapeshifting

Shapeshifting is another confirmed supernatural power that Wednesday‘s outcasts possess. The only known shapeshifter in Wednesday so far is the school’s former principal, Larissa Weems. Weems covered up Rowan’s death by shapeshifting into her former student’s body after his death at the hands of the Hyde.

At the time, Wednesday was unaware of Weems’ powers, but it became clearer when she used them again later in the season. Sadly, Weems was killed at the end of season 1. In Wednesday season 2, other shapeshifters made an appearance, while Weems returned as Wednesday’s spirit guide.

Siren Song

One of Nevermore’s major student groups is that of the Sirens, otherwise known as “scales.” Like their mythological name would suggest, Nevermore’s sirens have the ability to manipulate the behavior of those around them through their songs, or, more simply, their voices. Sirens need only to speak a command to anyone, and the recipient will carry it out without protest.

They are also part sea creatures, so when in the water, they grow a mermaid tail and can breathe underwater. The most prominent siren in Wednesday is Bianca Barclay, who is one of the more popular girls in school. Bianca’s siren abilities became important in Wednesday season 2, as Dort used them to manipulate people into furthering his nefarious plan.

Petrification

Another major clique in Wednesday’s world is that of the “stoners,” an apt name for the gorgon students at Nevermore. Like the sirens, the gorgons’ power is also heavily related to mythology. They each have snakes on their heads instead of hair, and if anyone makes eye contact with the snakes, they are frozen into a stone statue.

While the power to turn people into stone could be a good thing in certain situations, the gorgons have to be very careful, as it could also cause them a lot of problems. Even looking at themselves in the mirror can cause a gorgon to turn to stone, as highlighted with Ajax in Wednesday season 1.

As a result, the gorgon characters each wear a beanie to cover their snakes and avoid accidentally freezing someone. Ajax is the primary gorgon that the series has introduced, with his storyline revealing that the petrification effect is only temporary and wears off after an unspecified amount of time.
